1% For The Planet is an alliance of businesses that understand the necessity of protecting the natural environment. They understand that profit and loss are directly linked to our planet's health, and are concerned with the social and environmental impacts of industry. By contributing 1% of net annual sales to grassroots environmental groups, members of 1% For The Planet affect real change.

1% for The Planet was founded by Yvon Chouinard, creator of Patagonia, and Craig Mathews, owner of Blue Ribbon Flies. As passionate environmentalists who happened to also be running successful businesses they understood it was good business to protect the natural resources that kept them in business. And the rest is history... with over 1000 member companies with total giving since 2002 surpassing $50 million. It's about businesses recognizing that industry and ecology are inherently connected. It's about realizing the positive effects of connecting businesses, consumers and nonprofits through philanthropy. And it's about understanding that the true cost of doing business can be mitigated by a simple pledge to the planet.
